Did you know that cleaning out your dishwasher filter was something you should be doing once a month? Spotless dishes and clean wash water are easy to accomplish if you just know how to keep your dishwasher running just as it should — and that means rinsing out the little component that takes care of all those food covered dishes for you. Realistically, once you’ve taken out the bottom rack and found the filter, cleaning it should only take you a minute. And you’ll be so happy you did it!

All you need is some water, a paper towel, and a small scrubbing device like an old toothbrush.

Step 1: Remove the bottom rack of your dishwasher so you can access the filter location.

Step 2: Use a flashlight to locate your filter and determine if it is a cylinder that can be taken out or if it’s a flat screen above the water spout.

Step 3: If it’s a flat screen, remove and run under hot water until debris is gone and use a lightly wetted paper towel to remove any food debris around the area it was positioned in the dishwasher. If it’s a cylinder that can be taken out, rinse it under hot running water and use the toothbrush to scrub debris away.

Step 4: Put everything back in place and enjoy your new dishwasher results!
