After celebrating annually for over 100 years, the City of Galveston has decided to cancel this year's Mardi Gras festivities because of the pandemic. 

The less than shocking news about the annual larger-than-life festival came when the Galveston City Council unanimously voted on December 29 to cancel. Originally the event had been planned to take place from February 5 to 16. 

Mardi Gras! Galveston is the third-largest Carnival celebration in the U.S, and, with that being said, was expected to welcome more than 350,000 attendees for its lineup, which includes live concerts, parades, balcony parties, and elegant balls, along with new festive additions. Although the announcement came only shortly before the new year, many Mardi Gras sponsors, including the Knights of Momus, had already decided to cancel the Momus Grand Night Parade, coronation and ball.   

But Galveston won't be entirely alone in having to cancel its Mardi Gras festivities. New Orleans has also canceled its float parades and other mass events to stop any potential super spreader opportunities.
